Traditional Structured Query Langauge (SQL) databases are now also featuring newer techknowleges.  MySQL will soon have JSON as a native data type with advanced indexing and searching tools.  Plus a plug-in provides the ability to access MySQL database tables as a key/value pair via the memcached protocol that is nine times faster than traditiona SQL access. And you can access MySQL datanbases directly from a lightweight clinet using http for JSON or traditional SQL.
